Why do you feel this person deserves to be honored? : John and his husband James do so much for the community. From volunteering at Woods, fostering endless animals, decorating their home and the walking path next to their home at various holidays, spreading joy. Always so thoughtful and kind giving back to the community. I’m not sure how long they have lived in their current home, I think at least 10 years. John is one a good person with a really big heart. Nominee: John Zweemer
Does this person live or work in Los Osos? : Yes
Why do you feel this person deserves to be honored? : I am honored to nominate John Zweemer for Citizen of the Year because, to me, he is the hidden gem of Los Osos. Having grown up here, John has always embodied the spirit of this community, and his unwavering commitment to making Los Osos a better place is truly inspiring.
I've had the privilege of seeing John in action, often during some of the most challenging times. I’ve personally witnessed him out in the middle of a raging rainstorm, working tirelessly to clear fallen tree limbs from the roadway to keep others safe. His dedication to our community extends beyond just those moments—John also takes it upon himself to officially maintain the roadsides along Santa Ysabel and other roadsides, ensuring our town remains both beautiful and safe.
John’s passion for helping others extends far beyond the streets of Los Osos. For over six years, he has volunteered at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter, where his heart for animals shines brightly. John fosters a variety of animals—including cats, dogs, guinea pigs, and bunnies—giving them a safe, loving space to grow until they find their forever homes. He goes above and beyond, working with dogs who have behavioral challenges, helping them become adoptable, and ultimately saving lives.
In addition to his hands-on work, John advocates for these animals through the media, promoting adoption opportunities through KSBY and local radio stations. He is not only an incredible foster parent but also a mentor to new volunteers at the shelter, offering guidance and support as they navigate the rewarding and often challenging world of animal rescue.
John's generosity doesn't stop with animals. Every season, he takes the time to decorate the public pathway on Los Olivos between 11th and 12th streets, bringing joy and beauty to the entire neighborhood. His thoughtful gestures make our community feel warmer and more connected.
John is a true example of what it means to be selfless and dedicated to the well-being of others—whether human or animal. His quiet, consistent actions make him an irreplaceable part of our town, and I can think of no one more deserving of the title of Citizen of the Year than John Zweemer.
