Nominee: Steve Auslender

Does this person live or work in Los Osos? : Yes

Why do you feel this person deserves to be honored? : I first met Steve when I moved here in 2013. I moved down the street from his office , and I was borrowing his free community truck for my move. While checking out the truck, Kiwanis was having a tri-tip bbq. During that interaction, Steve convinced me to buy a tri-tip, and join Kiwanis. He became my Kiwanis sponsor , which I have now been a part of for 11 years. I am not quite sure how long he has lived / worked in Los Osos. But I know that he has at least been around since the 70s when he ran his bromeliad business in Baywood and was known as “Bromeliad Steve. “ Steve is a local real estate agent who has happily helped many folks in the area find their forever home. In his time in the area he has been committed to helping his community and has made an impact through his business, coaching and involvement with Kiwanis. Through his business, Bear Valley Realty he loans a moving truck to people free of charge to help them with their move , regardless of who they purchased their home from. He also loans this truck out to community events like Octoberfest and the annual holiday Christmas parade. He has also mentored many new agents, including myself in learning the ropes of the real estate business. Through coaching basketball at Los Osos middle school he has been a mentor to young boys. I witnessed this when working at his real estate office when kids from his current team and graduates would stop by to say hi on their way to the skate park. Through Kiwanis , Steve has been involved as a mentor in Key Club at the middle school. At the middle school he has helped recognize young people for citizenship traits and has coordinated their award efforts at our meetings. He has been on the committee to nominate Morro Bay high schoolers for scholarships. Also, at our meeting he provides a welcoming plant and mug to guests he has grown. He is the chairperson for making the annual community Easter Egg hunt happen at the community center . In conclusion, I nominate Steve Auslender as the citizen of the year in Los Osos for the dedication he has for our community. Whether he is helping people move into their homes, coaching our future leaders or entertaining kids at the annual Easter Egg hunt, Steve goes above and beyond for our community. And, finally, if he were to receive this award , I know he would respond, “ It’s my pleasure.” He truly lives to help others in all he does. Thank you for your dedication, Steve!
